My First Ride on The Tide

This post came little later than I wanted it to. Thanks to Hurricane. Irene and a stock inventory happening around the same time, spent a lot of time at work last week (or in bed recuperating). Still,I managed to squeeze a few hours out to ride The Tide on opening week, and take a few photos. Check them out on my Flickr page.

Besides the crazy crowds on opening weekend, I really enjoyed my ride on The Tide. It was fast (past NSU going to Newtown Road), smooth, and comfortable. Everyone on board liked it as well and wanted to see it expand soon. If ridership manages to stay above predictions (like it has since opening) expansion might happen sooner rather than later.

Guestbook Now Open

Many websites have features where visitors can comment on what they have read or seen. Let's try having something like that here. My site guestbook can be found via a link on the Contact page, or with a click here. Clicking on the bubble image above will take you there as well.

The Tide Finally Comes In

After numerous setbacks and delays that seemed like they would go on forever, The Tide will finally run for business on the 19th. The approximately seven mile starter light rail line winds its way across Norfolk from the Virginia Beach border through Downtown, to Eastern Virginia Medical Center Complex. The line hits many of Norfolk's hot spots such as Norfolk State University, MacArthur Mall, and Harbor Park.

The Tide stations will feature pieces from local artist and designers. A former professor of mine from Old Dominion University, Anne Bousqet, had work selected for the Newtown Road Station. Her design reflects her appreciation of the Norfolk neighborhood she resides in and the view many will see as they ride the trains.

DC Metro Map Contest

Greater Greater Washington, a well-known DC area urban planning blog focused on Washington and its denser suburbs, hosted a contest to redesign the iconic DC Metrorail Map. As a big urban transit fan and artist, I submitted my own map for the contest. Check out the post on the GGW site that mentions my map here.
